About Sheryl Tuorila
I am a handmade tile mosaic artist.
I am driven by the materials and seeing them together—so I rarely make detailed drawings and plans.
Up until recently my work had been abstract, but I’ve been working on landscapes in the last few years. This new direction started when I received a grant in 2014 from the Minnesota Arts Board to travel around the state of Minnesota, visit natural attractions and then return to the studio to create art inspired by those trips. I am proud to say this new imagery has culminated in two large-scale landscape murals at the MSP airport.
That time in nature made me realize its immense healing qualities, and I have since made it part of my daily life. In my art, I strive to capture a sunset or sunrise, the quiet solitude of a forest, the view of a complete horizon line. Taking time in nature to slow down, listen and observe, and then in turn, taking the time in my studio to make the tile and create the mosaic—makes it all the more beautiful, amazing and transforming.
